Forty-two minutes to the quietest corner of Marbella East

Los Monteros sits just east of Marbella town, on the stretch of coast around the Río Real. From the airport the driver follows the AP-7 through the Calahonda toll and leaves the A-7 at the Los Monteros or Río Real exit, depending on which side of the river you are staying. The whole journey is 42 minutes, and the fare, €70, sits between Elviria and Marbella centre.

The urbanisation itself is one of the oldest luxury estates on the coast: wide, tree-lined avenues, large plots and a beach club at the bottom. Cars enter by the main gate on the coastal road, and the driver takes you along the internal avenues to the villa or the hotel entrance.

Río Real, Bahía de Marbella and the beach side

West of the estate the Río Real valley holds a golf course and a cluster of apartment complexes on its slopes, with the boutique hotel at the bottom by the river. Bahía de Marbella and Alicate are the beachside neighbours towards Las Chapas, made up of townhouses and villas a few hundred metres from the sand. Each has its own access road from the A-7 service road, and none is more than five minutes from the motorway.

This is a part of Marbella where addresses are usually a villa name or a complex plus a number rather than a numbered street, so please give us what appears on your rental contract and, if you have it, the phone number of the key-holder.

Golf, tennis and a beach without a promenade

Los Monteros has always been a sports estate: the Río Real golf course is on its doorstep, tennis and padel courts sit within the urbanisation, and the beach club is a short walk down the avenue. Golfers arriving with clubs travel best in the estate car, which takes the bags flat with the rest of the luggage.

There is no promenade here and no shops inside the estate, which is the point for the people who choose it. The nearest supermarkets are at the Río Real exit and in Las Chapas, a couple of minutes by car; if you would like a short stop on the way from the airport, say so in the booking notes.

Local tips for your arrival

• Say which side of the Río Real you are on: the estate uses one exit, the golf valley another.
• Villa names are more useful than street numbers here; copy the name from your contract.
• Golf bags travel flat in the estate car; two players with clubs and cases fit comfortably.
• No shops inside the estate: request a supermarket stop in the booking notes if you need one on arrival.

Back to the airport from Los Monteros

For the return the driver comes into the estate or to the door of your complex and takes the A-7 eastbound straight from the Los Monteros exit; the airport is 42 minutes away. Add two hours at the terminal, or two and a half in high season and for flights outside Schengen, so a 15:00 departure means leaving at about 12:20. Golf bags are loaded flat in the estate car, so allow a couple of extra minutes if there are several.
