Estepona town, port and New Golden Mile

Taxi Málaga Airport → Estepona

Estepona keeps the feel of an Andalusian town, with a flower-filled old quarter, a working fishing port and a long promenade. Between Estepona and Marbella runs the New Golden Mile of resorts and beach hotels. About one hour from Málaga Airport on the AP-7.

An hour west: the toll road to Estepona and where it ends

Estepona is the first real town west of Marbella and the transfer is an hour of almost uninterrupted motorway. The driver stays on the AP-7 through the San Pedro tunnel and past Cancelada, and leaves at the Estepona junction, dropping onto the A-7 coastal road for the last stretch into the centre. The toll for the whole section is part of the €109 fare, which is why we never take the slower free road in summer.

The town is compact and flat by the sea and climbs gently behind. Hotels along the Avenida del Carmen and the Playa de la Rada have their own entrances; the old town, with its whitewashed streets and flower pots, is partly pedestrian and the driver stops at the nearest square. The marina and the beachfront apartments to the west are reached along the promenade road.

Old town, marina and the New Golden Mile

Three different Esteponas share one price. The centre is a working Andalusian town with a Wednesday market, a covered food market and a long promenade; the Puerto Deportivo to the west is a marina with restaurants and apartment blocks; and the coast east of the town, from Cancelada to the Kempinski and Ikos resorts, is the New Golden Mile of large hotels and gated developments.

If you are heading to a resort on the New Golden Mile, the driver leaves the motorway earlier, at Cancelada or Bahía Dorada, and the journey is a few minutes shorter. Give us the hotel or urbanisation name and we choose the exit; the fare is the same across the municipality.

Families, the promenade and arriving on market day

Estepona is one of the most family-friendly towns on this coast: the beaches are wide and shallow, the promenade is flat for miles and the old town has been repaved and planted with flowers. Child seats are free; add them in the form and they are already fitted when the car reaches the airport.

On Wednesday mornings the street market around the Avenida Juan Carlos I closes several roads until early afternoon. The driver knows the diversions and approaches the centre from the other side, so the drop-off is unchanged; it only matters if you plan to walk through the market with suitcases.

Local tips for your arrival

  • Resorts on the New Golden Mile are east of the town: name the hotel and the driver leaves the motorway at Cancelada, not Estepona.
  • Wednesday is market day in the centre; arrivals before 14:00 use a different approach road.
  • Old-town rentals are on pedestrian streets: keep the agency's phone handy for the lockbox code.
  • Estepona is the last big town before the longer Costa de la Luz routes; ask us about onward transfers to Sotogrande or Tarifa.

Back to the airport from Estepona

For the return the driver collects you at the hotel entrance or the nearest square to your flat and is on the AP-7 within ten minutes; the airport is an hour away. Add two hours at the terminal, two and a half in summer and for flights outside Schengen such as the UK, so a 13:00 flight means a pickup around 09:55. From the New Golden Mile resorts the run is five minutes shorter, and we confirm the exact time with you the day before.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Málaga Airport to Estepona?

A private sedan for up to 4 passengers costs €109 one way; the estate €131 and the minivan for up to 8 passengers €164. Prices include luggage and VAT. Tolls are not included: we take the toll-free A-7 and, if you prefer the AP-7 motorway, the toll is paid separately.

How long is the drive from Málaga Airport to Estepona?

About 60 minutes for 85 km, using the AP-7 motorway where available. Summer weekends can add 10 to 20 minutes.

Is the AP-7 toll to Estepona included in the price?

No. The fare covers the transfer, luggage and VAT. We take the toll-free A-7 as standard; if you prefer the AP-7 motorway, the toll is paid separately to the driver.

Do the Kempinski and Ikos resorts count as Estepona for the price?

Yes. Both are on the New Golden Mile inside Estepona municipality and the €109 sedan fare applies. The driver leaves the AP-7 at Cancelada, so they are in fact a few minutes closer than the town centre.

How long is the drive from Málaga Airport to Estepona in August?

Sixty minutes on the AP-7 most of the day. Between 19:00 and 21:00 on summer Fridays the last stretch of the A-7 into town can add ten minutes; the toll road itself rarely slows.

Can the driver take us into Estepona old town?

As far as the squares that border it, such as the Plaza de las Flores side or the Calle Real end. The narrow streets beyond are pedestrian and the driver walks the bags with you.

Where does the driver meet me at Málaga Airport?

In the arrivals hall of Terminal 3, holding a sign with your name. All flights, including Terminal 2 arrivals, exit through the same hall.
