How a transfer to Gibraltar actually works

Gibraltar is a British territory with its own border, so a transfer from Málaga Airport is a journey to the frontier at La Línea plus a crossing. Our standard service takes you to the frontier in 95 minutes for €175, where you walk through passport control and across the runway into town in about fifteen minutes; the taxis and buses on the Gibraltar side are a few metres beyond the crossing. Everyone needs a passport, including EU citizens.

Crossing in the vehicle is possible on request when you book, but it depends on the queue at the frontier, which can be a few minutes or well over an hour on busy days. We tell you honestly what to expect for your date and time, and most guests with wheeled luggage find the walk quicker than the car queue.

The drive: motorway to Guadiaro, then the bay road

The route is the same as La Línea: the AP-7 toll road to its end at the Guadiaro river, the free A-7 around the top of the bay of Algeciras with the refineries on one side and the Rock ahead, then the CA-34 straight down into La Línea and the frontier. The driver drops you at the pedestrian entrance, not at a car park several streets away.

The whole journey is 95 minutes in normal traffic. The fare does not include tolls: the AP-7 sections are paid separately if you choose that road. It is exactly ten euros more than La Línea because the frontier drop is at the far end of the town, and it covers the time the driver spends at the crossing helping with luggage.

Hotels on the Rock, the airport runway and luggage

Hotels in Gibraltar are in the town at the foot of the Rock, at Ocean Village by the marina or on the eastern side at Catalan Bay. From the frontier, Ocean Village is a ten-minute walk and Main Street fifteen; Catalan Bay and the hotels higher up are better reached by a local taxi from the rank just inside the border. The runway crossing closes for a few minutes when aircraft land, which is part of the experience rather than a delay.

Pack for the walk: a wheeled case and a rucksack are fine on the runway road; four large suitcases are not, and in that case ask for the vehicle crossing or plan a local taxi on the Gibraltar side. Gibraltar uses pounds and euros, and drives on the right, like Spain.

Local tips for your arrival

  • Passports for everyone, in hand luggage: there is no crossing without one, EU citizen or not.
  • Walk across if you have a wheeled case and a rucksack; ask for the vehicle crossing only with heavy luggage or reduced mobility.
  • The runway closes briefly for landings; do not plan the crossing to the minute.
  • Gibraltar drives on the right and takes euros; local taxis wait just inside the border for Catalan Bay and the Upper Rock.

Back to the airport from Gibraltar

For the flight home we collect you at the frontier on the Spanish side at the agreed time; walk across from your hotel allowing for the morning queue, which is longest between 07:30 and 09:30 on weekdays. The drive to Málaga Airport is 95 minutes, so add two hours at the terminal, two and a half in summer or for UK and other non-Schengen flights: a 13:00 flight means being at the frontier by about 09:25. The driver waits fifteen minutes free and is reachable by phone if the crossing is slow.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Málaga Airport to Gibraltar?

A private sedan for up to 4 passengers costs €175 one way; the estate €210 and the minivan for up to 8 passengers €263. Prices include luggage and VAT. Tolls are not included: we take the toll-free A-7 and, if you prefer the AP-7 motorway, the toll is paid separately.

How long is the drive from Málaga Airport to Gibraltar?

About 95 minutes for 137 km, using the AP-7 motorway where available. Summer weekends can add 10 to 20 minutes.

Does the vehicle cross the border into Gibraltar?

Yes. Bring your passport; the driver handles the crossing and takes you to your hotel door. If you prefer to cross on foot, we can drop you in La Línea at a lower fare.

Does the driver take us into Gibraltar or leave us at the border?

The standard service ends at the pedestrian frontier in La Línea, where you cross on foot in about fifteen minutes. A vehicle crossing can be requested when you book; it is subject to the queue on the day and we advise you honestly beforehand.

Do I need a passport to enter Gibraltar from Spain?

Yes, every traveller does, including EU citizens and children. National identity cards are not accepted at the Gibraltar frontier, so keep passports in your hand luggage on the flight.

Why is Gibraltar €175 when La Línea is €165?

The frontier is at the far southern end of La Línea and the driver stays with you at the crossing to unload and help with the luggage. The ten-euro difference covers that extra distance and time.

Where does the driver meet me at Málaga Airport?

In the arrivals hall of Terminal 3, holding a sign with your name. All flights, including Terminal 2 arrivals, exit through the same hall.
