Over the hill to the Atlantic: the last leg into Tarifa

Tarifa is where the Mediterranean ends and the Atlantic begins, and the drive shows it. After the AP-7 and the bay of Algeciras the driver takes the N-340 over the hills of the Estrecho natural park, with wind turbines on every ridge and Africa across the water, and drops into Tarifa 110 minutes after leaving the terminal. The €199 fare does not include the toll sections at the start; the long stretch at the end is toll-free.

The town has three parts: the walled old town inside the medieval gate, the newer streets around it, and the beaches of Los Lances and Valdevaqueros stretching north along the coast road. Hotels in the old town are on pedestrian lanes and the driver stops at the nearest gate; beach hotels and campsites along the N-340 have their own entrances.

Kitesurfers, boards and the levante

Tarifa is Europe's wind capital, and a large share of our passengers travel with kite bags and boards. A kite quiver and a board bag fit in the estate car with the seats up for two people; a group of four with full gear travels in the minivan. Tell us the number and size of the bags when you book and we send the right vehicle rather than guessing at the airport.

The levante, the east wind, can blow for days in summer and makes the last stretch over the hills gusty; the driver adjusts speed accordingly and it adds nothing to the journey. It does empty the beaches near town and fill Valdevaqueros and Punta Paloma, which is where the schools move on strong days.

Ferries to Tangier, whales and a base for the Costa de la Luz

Tarifa's port has a fast ferry to Tangier city, which many travellers combine with a day or two in Morocco; the terminal is at the bottom of the old town and the driver can drop you there directly. The same port is the departure point for whale and dolphin boats in the Strait, which run most of the year when the wind allows.

From Tarifa the Costa de la Luz beaches of Bolonia, Zahara and Los Caños are half an hour away, and many of our guests use the town as a first base before moving up the coast. We quote fixed prices for onward transfers between the Costa de la Luz towns if you ask when booking.

Local tips for your arrival

  • Kite or surf gear: give us the number of board bags so we send the estate car or the minivan.
  • Old-town hotels are inside the walls: the driver stops at the medieval gate and helps carry bags through the lanes.
  • Ferry to Tangier the same day? Tell us the sailing time; the terminal is a direct drop at the bottom of town.
  • Book at least 48 hours ahead: Tarifa is one of our long routes and the vehicle is dedicated to your journey.

Back to the airport from Tarifa

For the return the driver collects you at the hotel entrance, the medieval gate for old-town stays or the ferry terminal if you are coming back from Tangier, and takes the N-340 and the AP-7 to the airport in 110 minutes. Add two hours at the terminal, two and a half in summer and for non-Schengen flights, so a 14:00 flight means leaving Tarifa at about 10:10. Kite gear is loaded first so it lies flat; allow five extra minutes if there are several bags.
