Ninety minutes to the frontier town
La Línea de la Concepción is the Spanish town pressed against the Gibraltar border, and for most travellers it is the place where the Rock trip starts. The driver takes the AP-7 to its end at Guadiaro, continues on the free A-7 around the bay and turns onto the CA-34 at San Roque, the dual carriageway that runs straight into La Línea. Ninety minutes from the arrivals hall. The €165 fare does not include tolls.
The town is flat and gridded, with the frontier at its southern tip, the beaches of Levante and Poniente on either side and the marina of Alcaidesa Marina by the border fence. Addresses are ordinary streets, and hotels near the frontier have vehicle access on the Avenida Príncipe de Asturias, the road that ends at the crossing.
Staying on the Spanish side of the Rock
Many visitors to Gibraltar sleep in La Línea: hotels are cheaper, the frontier is a ten-minute walk from the centre and crossing on foot is quick outside the morning rush. If that is your plan, book La Línea rather than Gibraltar; the price is ten euros lower and the driver takes you straight to your hotel door.
The frontier crossing works with a passport for everyone, and pedestrians walk across the airport runway on the Gibraltar side. Cars from Spain can cross, but queues vary; for guests who want to be driven over the line we explain the options on the Gibraltar page.
Beaches, the bay and what the town is really like
La Línea is not a resort. It is a working town of a hundred thousand people with a long promenade on the Levante beach facing the open Mediterranean and a quieter bay beach on the Poniente side looking at the port of Algeciras. The Rock rises at the end of every street, which is what people remember.
Families use the town as a cheap base for the Rock, the Costa de la Luz beaches an hour west and Sotogrande fifteen minutes east. Child seats are free and fitted before departure; add them in the form. The Sunday market by the bullring and the summer fair in July are the two times traffic in the centre is heavy.

Local tips for your arrival
- Sleeping in La Línea and visiting the Rock on foot? Book this page, not Gibraltar: same crossing, lower fare.
- Everyone needs a passport at the frontier, including EU citizens; keep them in hand luggage.
- Sunday morning market and the July fair make the centre slow; the driver approaches from the beach side then.
- Cross on foot early: the pedestrian queue is shortest before 09:00 and after 18:00.
Back to the airport from La Línea de la Concepción
For the return the driver collects you at the hotel door or your street in La Línea and takes the CA-34 and A-7 back to the AP-7; the airport is 90 minutes away. Add two hours at the terminal, two and a half in summer and for flights outside Schengen, so a 12:30 flight means leaving at about 09:00. If you are crossing back from Gibraltar on foot before the pickup, allow extra time for the frontier queue in the morning.

About ten minutes from the main squares, less from the hotels on the Avenida Príncipe de Asturias. From the crossing to Gibraltar's Main Street is another fifteen minutes on foot, across the runway.

Where does the driver meet me at Málaga Airport?
In the arrivals hall of Terminal 3, holding a sign with your name. All flights, including Terminal 2 arrivals, exit through the same hall.
