Sabinillas, La Duquesa and the village above the vineyards

Manilva is the last municipality of Málaga province before Cádiz, and like its neighbours it has a coast and a hill village. On the coast, San Luis de Sabinillas is a real seaside town with a promenade and shops, and Puerto de la Duquesa is a marina ringed by apartments and restaurants. Manilva village itself sits a few kilometres inland among the vineyards that give the area its grapes and its August festival.

From the airport the road west runs to the Manilva exit in about 72 minutes, and Sabinillas or the marina are five minutes further. The €129 fare does not include the AP-7 toll, which is paid separately if you prefer that road. The village is another ten minutes up the hill on a straightforward road.

The marina, the beach road and the estates behind them

Puerto de la Duquesa is compact: a ring road around the marina with apartment blocks facing the boats, and the castle of La Duquesa on the beach beside it. Cars circle the port and stop by the block entrances. Along the beach road towards Sabinillas and west towards the river, urbanisations such as Duquesa Village, Hacienda Guadalupe and the Duquesa golf estates have barriers and intercoms.

Sabinillas is different again: a grid of ordinary streets with shops on the ground floor, a Friday market and a promenade that runs west to the mouth of the Manilva river. Addresses there are normal street numbers, and the driver can stop at the door at any hour.

A quieter base between two coasts

Guests choose Manilva for value and calm: it sits between the Costa del Sol resorts and the Sotogrande estates, with prices and pace that belong to neither. Estepona is fifteen minutes east, Sotogrande ten minutes west and Gibraltar half an hour, which makes it a practical base for a week that mixes beaches, golf and a day trip to the Rock.

For families, the beaches at Sabinillas and the castle are sheltered and shallow, and the promenade is flat for a pushchair from the marina to the river mouth. Child seats are fitted free before the driver leaves for the airport; add the number and ages in the booking form.

Local tips for your arrival

  • Puerto de la Duquesa, Sabinillas and Manilva village are three different places: name the one you are staying in.
  • Marina blocks are entered from the ring road; give the block name and the driver stops at the right portal.
  • Friday is market day in Sabinillas: arrivals before 14:00 may use the beach road instead of the centre.
  • Gibraltar is 30 minutes away; ask us for a fixed price if you plan a day trip from Manilva.

Back to the airport from Manilva

For the return the driver collects you at the marina block, the estate barrier or your street door in Sabinillas, and joins the AP-7 at Manilva; the run to the airport is 72 minutes. Allow two hours at the terminal, two and a half in high season and for non-Schengen flights, so a 14:00 flight means leaving at about 10:45. From the village add ten minutes for the descent.
