Up the gorge road: the last ten kilometres explained

Benahavís is the white village in the hills behind San Pedro, and the transfer is the San Pedro route plus a climb. The driver leaves the AP-7 at San Pedro and takes the A-7175 up the Guadalmina gorge, a winding road between rock walls that opens out into the village after about ten minutes. Sixty minutes from the arrivals hall, and the €99 fare covers the mountain road but not the motorway toll, which is paid separately if you choose the AP-7.

The village itself is small and steep, with narrow streets, restaurants stacked up the hill and a car park at the entrance. Hotels and rentals in the centre are reached on foot from the nearest turning point; the driver walks the luggage with you. Around the village, and stretching back down towards the coast, the municipality is a patchwork of large golf estates that are reached from different roads.

La Zagaleta, El Madroñal, Los Arqueros: which road, which gate

Benahavís municipality is home to some of the most private estates on the coast. La Zagaleta and El Madroñal have their own gates on the Ronda road above San Pedro; Los Arqueros and La Quinta are reached from the Nueva Andalucía side; Los Flamingos and the Villa Padierna area from the coast road near Cancelada; Monte Mayor and La Heredia from the gorge road itself. The exit from the motorway depends entirely on which one you are in.

Villages, restaurants and a different kind of week

People who choose Benahavís come for the quiet and the food: the village is known across the coast for its restaurants, and an evening here is calmer than anything on the seafront. The beach at San Pedro is fifteen minutes down the gorge, Puerto Banús twenty. Guests in the estates tend to book a car for evenings out; we quote fixed prices for local journeys if you ask.

The gorge road is safe and well surfaced but it winds, and passengers who suffer in cars may prefer a seat at the front. Child seats are free and fitted before departure, and the minivan takes eight with luggage for the larger villas on the hill.

Local tips for your arrival

• The estate name decides the motorway exit: Los Flamingos, La Quinta and La Zagaleta are reached by three different roads.
• Register your names with the estate lodge through the owner before flying; Benahavís gates are strict.
• Village rentals are on foot from the turning point: pack so that a short walk with the bags is easy.
• Prone to car sickness? Ask for the front seat for the gorge road; the driver will happily arrange it.

Back to the airport from Benahavís

For the return the driver comes up to the village turning point or through the estate gate at the agreed time, and the descent through the gorge plus the AP-7 takes 60 minutes to the terminal. Allow two hours at the airport, or two and a half in July and August and for flights outside Schengen, so a 17:00 departure means leaving Benahavís at about 13:55. Estates on the Nueva Andalucía or coast side are a few minutes quicker, which we take into account when we confirm the time.
