A white town on a hill, 140 minutes from the terminal

Vejer de la Frontera stands on a hilltop ten kilometres inland from the Costa de la Luz beaches, and you see it from the road long before you arrive. The drive is the AP-7 to Guadiaro, the N-340 through Algeciras and Tarifa, then the A-48 dual carriageway north to the Vejer exit and a short climb to the town; 140 minutes from the arrivals hall, €249. Tolls are not included.

The old town at the top is a warren of white lanes, arches and patios inside the walls, closed to most traffic. The driver takes the car as far as the Plaza de España or the car parks below the walls, depending on where your hotel is, and walks with you the rest of the way. Newer streets and the Plazuela area on the way up have normal access.

El Palmar, Los Caños and the beaches below the town

Many bookings marked Vejer are in fact for the coast in its municipality: El Palmar, the long surf beach with its chiringuitos and schools, and Los Caños de Meca and Zahora at the foot of the Trafalgar lighthouse. The fare is the same, and the driver leaves the A-48 at a different exit; tell us the beach and the house name.

These beach settlements are informal, with sandy tracks and houses without numbers. The key-holder's phone number and a description of the house are more useful than an address, and the driver will call ahead from the main road so someone is waiting.

Surf boards, market days and staying up in the town

El Palmar is a surf beach, and boards travel in the estate car or the minivan lying flat; say how many in the booking and we send the right vehicle. In the town, the Saturday market and the summer evenings fill the lower streets, and the old-town hotels are reached on foot at any time, so pack for a few minutes of cobbles.

Vejer is a good base for the whole southern Costa de la Luz: Conil is fifteen minutes north, Zahara twenty-five south and Cádiz city under an hour. We quote fixed prices for local journeys between these places if you ask when booking.

Local tips for your arrival

  • Town or beach? El Palmar and Los Caños are Vejer municipality at the same fare, but a different exit.
  • Beach houses have no numbers: send the key-holder's phone and a description of the house.
  • Old-town hotels are on foot from the Plaza de España; a rucksack copes with the cobbles better than a hard case.
  • Surf boards go flat in the estate car; tell us how many.

Back to the airport from Vejer de la Frontera

For the return the driver waits at the Plaza de España for old-town stays, at the house for El Palmar or Los Caños, and takes the A-48 and N-340 back to the AP-7; the airport is 140 minutes away. Add two hours at the terminal, two and a half in summer and for flights outside Schengen, so a 17:00 flight means leaving Vejer at about 12:40. From the beaches allow ten minutes more for the sandy tracks.
