The bay's other shore: 165 minutes via Jerez or the coast

El Puerto de Santa María sits on the northern shore of the bay of Cádiz, at the mouth of the Guadalete river, and it is usually reached from Málaga by the inland road: AP-7 to Guadiaro, the A-7 to Los Barrios, the A-381 through the cork forests of Los Alcornocales to Jerez, and the A-4 down to El Puerto. It is 240 kilometres and about 165 minutes, €289, tolls not included, and we ask for 48 hours' notice.

The town has a compact centre of low white houses and sherry bodegas along the river, the Puerto Sherry marina and the beaches of Valdelagrana and Vistahermosa on either side. Hotels in the centre are on normal streets, though some of the oldest lanes near the river are narrow; the resorts along Valdelagrana and the estates at Vistahermosa have proper entrances.

Valdelagrana, Vistahermosa and Puerto Sherry

Valdelagrana is the beach district east of the river, a long strand with apartment blocks and hotels along a promenade; addresses there are street numbers and the driver stops at the door. Vistahermosa, on the western side, is a residential estate of villas and pines with gated streets and the Puerto Sherry marina at its edge, so villa rentals need the estate name and the house number.

Between them the centre is small enough to walk across in fifteen minutes, from the bullring to the river and the catamaran pier for Cádiz. For a first evening, the tapas streets around the Ribera del Marisco are where the town eats.

Sherry, the catamaran and a base between Cádiz and Jerez

El Puerto is one of the three sherry towns, and its bodegas are a short walk from any central hotel. It is also the most practical base for the bay: the catamaran crosses to Cádiz in half an hour, Jerez is twenty minutes by road and the Costa de la Luz beaches of Rota and Chipiona are just up the coast. We quote fixed prices for these local journeys if you ask.

Families come for the Valdelagrana beach, which is wide, shallow and backed by a promenade; child seats are free and fitted before the driver leaves for the airport. The summer fair in late spring and the sherry harvest events in September fill the centre for a few evenings.

Local tips for your arrival

  • Valdelagrana is east of the river, Vistahermosa west: say which so the driver takes the right bridge.
  • Villa rentals in Vistahermosa need the estate name and house number; streets there are gated.
  • The catamaran to Cádiz leaves from the centre: a good way to visit the city without a car.
  • 48 hours' notice for this route; the inland road through Los Alcornocales is the usual way.

Back to the airport from El Puerto de Santa María

For the return the driver collects you at the hotel entrance, the villa gate in Vistahermosa or your door in Valdelagrana, and takes the A-4 to Jerez and the A-381 back to the coast and the AP-7; the airport is 165 minutes away. Add two hours at the terminal, two and a half in summer and for flights outside Schengen, so a 19:00 flight means leaving El Puerto at about 14:15. We confirm the time the day before.
