Two hours forty across two provinces

Cádiz is the far end of our map, 235 kilometres and 160 minutes from Málaga Airport, and the drive crosses the whole of the Strait coast before turning north. The AP-7 to Guadiaro, the N-340 past Algeciras and Tarifa with Africa in view, the A-48 past Vejer, Conil and Chiclana, and finally the causeway across the salt marshes into the old city on its island. The €280 fare does not include tolls, and we ask for 48 hours' notice.

We can also take the inland route through the Los Alcornocales park on the A-381 from Los Barrios to Jerez and then down the bay, which is similar in time and better on days when the levante is strong around Tarifa. The driver chooses on the day based on traffic and wind, and tells you which way he is going.

Old Cádiz: narrow streets, one road in and where cars can stop

The old city is a dense grid of narrow streets on a peninsula, and most of it is either pedestrian or restricted to residents. Hotels tell their guests which nearby square or car park the taxi can reach; typically the driver stops on the Avenida del Puerto, the Plaza de San Juan de Dios side or by the Plaza de España, and walks the last few streets with your luggage. Ask your hotel for its drop-off point and put it in the booking notes.

The newer city, along the Avenida de Andalucía and the Playa de la Victoria, is straightforward: wide avenues, hotels with forecourts and apartment blocks with normal street numbers, so the car stops at the door at any hour. The fare is the same for both halves of the city.

Carnival, cruise ships and the bay towns

Cádiz in Carnival, in February or early March, closes much of the old city for ten days; arrivals then are on foot from further away and we tell you where. The cruise port on the Avenida del Puerto is a direct drop for ship passengers, and the AVE station next to it connects to Madrid and Seville if you are combining train and transfer.

El Puerto de Santa María is across the bay by catamaran or twenty minutes by road, and Jerez forty minutes inland; both have their own pages. For a first evening, the Playa de la Caleta and the old quarter of La Viña are a ten-minute walk from most hotels, and the driver can point you the right way.

Local tips for your arrival

  • Ask your old-city hotel for its taxi drop-off point and write it in the booking notes.
  • Carnival closes the old city for ten days in February or March: arrivals then involve a longer walk.
  • Cruise passengers: the terminal on the Avenida del Puerto is a direct drop, no walking needed.
  • 48 hours' notice: this is our longest route and the driver's day is planned around it.

Back to the airport from Cádiz

For the return the driver waits at the hotel's drop-off point or your door in the new city and takes the A-48 and the coast, or the A-381 inland, back to Málaga in 160 minutes. Add two hours at the terminal, two and a half in summer and for flights outside Schengen, so a 20:00 flight means leaving Cádiz at about 15:20. We confirm the route and the time with you the day before, and the driver waits fifteen minutes free.
