Marbella is a municipality thirty kilometres long, and the name on a hotel booking can mean anything from a townhouse in the old walls to a golf villa in the hills or a beach block twenty minutes east of the centre. Choosing the right area matters more here than in most resorts, because the areas do not connect on foot and the character changes completely from one to the next.
This guide goes through them from east to west, the order in which you meet them driving from Málaga Airport, with what each is like, who it suits and the journey time from the arrivals hall on the AP-7.
The east: Cabopino, Elviria, Las Chapas and Los Monteros
The first Marbella you reach from the airport is a string of beach districts between the motorway and the sea: Cabopino with its small marina and dunes at 36 minutes, Elviria with its long family beach and commercial centre at 38, the low-rise estates of Las Chapas at 40 and the leafy urbanisation of Los Monteros at 42. Prices for accommodation are gentler than in the centre and the beaches are wider.
This is where families come for a beach week: apartments among pines, hotels built around big pools, chiringuitos at the end of every road. There is no nightlife to speak of and no town centre; Marbella is fifteen minutes by car for an evening out. If you want quiet, sand and the shortest transfer from the airport, look here.
Marbella centre and the Old Town
Marbella town, 45 minutes from the airport, is the only part of the municipality that works as a walkable city. The Casco Antiguo inside the old walls is a maze of white lanes around the Plaza de los Naranjos, full of restaurants and small hotels; below it the Avenida del Mar leads to the Paseo Marítimo and a promenade that runs for kilometres in both directions. The streets north of Ricardo Soriano are where residents live and where the supermarkets are.
Stay here if you want to walk everywhere, eat out every night and not depend on a car. The beaches in town are narrower than the eastern ones and busy in summer, and old-town rentals are on pedestrian streets where cars cannot reach the door.
Key takeaways
- Marbella's areas do not connect on foot; choose by how you want to spend evenings, not by the name.
- The east (Cabopino to Los Monteros) is the family beach zone and the closest to the airport, 36 to 42 minutes.
- The centre is the only walkable town; the Golden Mile is resorts without a centre.
- Puerto Banús is marina and nightlife; Nueva Andalucía above it is golf and villas.
- San Pedro is a real town at lower prices; Sierra Blanca and Benahavís are gated villa hills.
The Golden Mile
West of the town, the Golden Mile is four kilometres of coast along the old N-340 with the grand resorts of Marbella, Marbella Club and Puente Romano among them, beach clubs, and residential estates on the hill side such as Nagüeles and Lomas del Marbella Club. It is 47 minutes from the airport and it has no centre of its own: guests stay inside their resort or drive to town or Banús.
It suits couples and families who have chosen a particular hotel and intend to stay in it, and villa renters who want a large house with a pool and do not mind driving for dinner. A supermarket is a short drive away, not a walk.
Puerto Banús
Puerto Banús, 50 minutes from the airport, is the marina: yachts, designer shops on the front line, restaurants and a nightlife that runs until dawn in summer. Around it are apartment blocks, some of the coast's best beaches at the Playas del Duque, and hotels on the Avenida Julio Iglesias. It is loud, expensive and busy in July and August, and pleasantly calm from October to May.
Stay here for the marina scene, for nightlife, or for a beach apartment with everything on the doorstep. Do not stay here for quiet in high season. The front line closes to cars in the evening, so arrivals with luggage use the service roads behind.
Nueva Andalucía and the Golf Valley
Directly above Puerto Banús, on the inland side of the motorway, Nueva Andalucía rises into the Golf Valley: Las Brisas, Los Naranjos, Aloha and La Quinta, with villas and gated communities between the fairways. It is 50 minutes from the airport, a few minutes more to the top of the valley, and it is quieter and greener than anything on the coast, with the marina ten minutes down the hill.
Golfers, larger families in villas and anyone who wants a pool and a view rather than a beach on the doorstep choose Nueva Andalucía. Most properties are in gated estates, so registration with the lodge is part of arriving.
San Pedro Alcántara and Guadalmina
San Pedro, 55 minutes from the airport, is the westernmost district of Marbella and a real town: church square, market, promenade and a landscaped boulevard built over the motorway tunnel. It costs less than the centre and it is easier with a pushchair. Beside it, Guadalmina is a villa estate around two golf courses with a wide, quiet beach at the bottom.
San Pedro suits families who want a town with local life rather than a resort, and residents-to-be trying the area out. Guadalmina is for golfers and villa weeks.
Above it all: Sierra Blanca and Benahavís
On the hill above the Golden Mile, Sierra Blanca is a gated estate of large villas with views over the whole bay, 48 minutes from the airport. Further west, the municipality of Benahavís holds the most exclusive estates on the coast, La Zagaleta and El Madroñal among them, and a white village in the hills known for its restaurants, an hour from the terminal.
These are villa destinations, chosen for privacy, silence and space, with the beach and the restaurants a short drive down the hill. Every property has a gate and a name, and arrival is smoother when the estate has your name on its list.
Putting it together
Beach and quiet with children: the east. Walking, restaurants, no car: the centre. A specific resort: the Golden Mile. Marina life and nights out: Puerto Banús. Golf and villas: Nueva Andalucía or Guadalmina. A real town at a lower price: San Pedro. Privacy and views: Sierra Blanca or Benahavís. From the airport, the difference between the nearest and the furthest is under half an hour, so the transfer time should not decide it; the way you want to spend your evenings should.
