From Málaga train station and the cruise port to Marbella: how it works

Not everyone reaches the Costa del Sol by air. The AVE brings passengers from Madrid to Málaga María Zambrano station in under three hours, and the cruise terminals in the port see ships from all over the Mediterranean. Both leave the traveller in Málaga city, 57 kilometres from Marbella, facing the same fact as the air passenger: there is no train to Marbella, and the last leg is by road.

This guide covers where the station and the port terminals are, what the options are from each, and why a private transfer from either costs the same as from the airport with a local company.

María Zambrano: the station and what surrounds it

Málaga María Zambrano is the city's main station, west of the centre, with the AVE and long-distance platforms on one level and the local C1 line below. It shares a building with a shopping centre, and the bus station is across the road. Arriving from Madrid, Seville or Córdoba you walk out into the main concourse; the taxi rank and the pickup area are at the front of the building on the Explanada de la Estación side.

A pre-booked driver meets AVE passengers on the concourse, at the exit from the platforms, with a name board, exactly as at the airport. Give the train number when you book; the driver checks the arrival time and Spanish long-distance trains are usually punctual.

Why there is no train to Marbella

The Málaga suburban line runs from the airport and the city to Fuengirola and stops there; the extension to Marbella has been discussed for decades and has never been built. A high-speed line along the coast is a political project rather than a timetable. For now, from the station the choices for Marbella are the bus from the station across the road, a taxi from the rank, or a transfer booked in advance.

The bus is frequent and takes about an hour to Marbella bus station, north of the town; from there most people take a taxi. For anyone with luggage, or heading to Puerto Banús, the Golden Mile or an urbanisation, a car from the station door to the destination door is the practical answer.

Key takeaways

  • The AVE arrives at María Zambrano; cruise ships dock at the Levante quay or the Palmeral berth; neither has a train to Marbella.
  • Pre-booked drivers meet passengers on the station concourse and at the cruise terminal exit with a name board.
  • Transfers from the station or the port cost the same as from the airport with a local company: Marbella about 45 minutes, Puerto Banús 50.
  • Give the train number or the ship's name; arrival times are tracked and waiting time is included.
  • Reverse journeys to a cruise or an AVE are planned with the operator's check-in margin.

The cruise port: terminals and where the car waits

Málaga's cruise port has terminals on the eastern breakwater, the Levante quay, for larger ships, and a berth near the centre at the Palmeral for smaller ones. Passengers disembark, pass through the terminal building and come out to a pickup area where taxis, coaches and pre-booked cars wait. Tell the transfer company the ship's name and the terminal if you know it; drivers meet cruise passengers at the terminal exit with a name board.

Ship timings are precise on paper and flexible in practice: disembarkation can take an hour after docking. A fixed-price transfer with waiting time included absorbs that; a taxi from the rank does not need booking but will not carry child seats or a large group.

Same price as the airport

With most local companies, a transfer from the station or the port to Marbella costs the same as from the airport, because the distances and the road are almost identical: from the city the car joins the ring road and the AP-7 within minutes and the journey to Marbella centre is about 45 minutes, to Puerto Banús 50, to Estepona an hour. Our prices are listed by destination and apply from all three points.

The reverse works too. For a cruise leaving Málaga or an AVE back to Madrid, the driver collects you in Marbella and drops at the terminal or the station door; give the departure time and the pickup is planned with the margin the operator asks for.

Combining train and transfer from Madrid

Some visitors from Madrid, and from further north, take the AVE to Málaga rather than fly, especially with children or bicycles. The train arrives in the city centre, there is no airport walk and no baggage belt, and a transfer from the station gets to Marbella at about the same hour as a flight landing at the same time. Book the train number as you would a flight number, and the driver is on the concourse when you walk off the platform.

A day in Málaga first

If the ship or the train leaves you time, Málaga city is worth a few hours: the Picasso museum and the cathedral are a short walk from the port, and the station is fifteen minutes from the centre by taxi. Transfers can be booked for a later pickup from a hotel or a restaurant in the centre rather than from the station or the port; give the address and the time and the price to Marbella is unchanged.
